Mules football will be heading to Bolivar, Mo., Saturday to take on the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats at 1:30 p.m.
The Mules (3-2, 1-2 MIAA) are looking to get back in the win column after a 13-10 loss Saturday in St. Joseph, Mo., to Missouri Western. But playing on the road hasn't been too kind to the Mules. They are now 0-2 in road games this season. Mules' head coach Willie Fritz said the team needs to improve on toughness and needs to make plays.
"We've just got to be more physical," Fritz said. "Both games, we weren't very good at tackling and we weren't too physical. We've got to come out and play a more intense style of football."
SBU is a running football team and the Mules had a tough time stopping the run against Western. The Bearcats put up 546 rushing yards against Missouri-Rolla on Saturday. Fritz said the Bearcats are an option running team. They don't depend on power running.
"I'm sure their going to run the football at us," Fritz said. "We'll have to do a good job of playing assignment football."
The Mules went into halftime leading Missouri Western 10-0, but two turnovers kept the Mules from scoring in the second half. Both turnovers led to points for the Griffons and a 13 point turnaround.
"We had a couple of untimely turnovers," Fritz said. "Both led to points for Missouri Western."
The Mules also had a tough time catching the ball in the second half. Two dropped third down passes kept the Mules from getting first downs on critical drives.
"That would have kept the chains moving," Fritz said. "[Missouri Western] would have had the ball a lot less."
But the Mules just didn't have enough to stop the Griffons rushing attack. Jeremiah White carried the load for the Griffons. He had 31 rushes for 201 yards. The Mules need to sure up that part of the defense heading into the SBU game.
"The game kind of dictated they would keep running the football," Fritz said. "We didn't do a good job of tackling."
Will Caldwell led the Mules in rushing with 86 yards on 16 carries. He also scored the only Mule touchdown. Micah Hefner, who had scored a touchdown in the first four games of the season, led the Mules with six catches for 75 yards. Mules' quarterback Toby Korrodi was 23-35 for 210 yards on the day.
The Mules need to get back on track after the loss. The next couple of games will show what the team is made of. They need wins in order to stay in contention for the MIAA title.
Fritz said a victory over SBU would be big for the Mules and would give them momentum heading into their homecoming game Oct. 15 against Missouri Southern.
"We need to get back on the winning track," Fritz said. "It would just give us a lot of confidence heading into the stretch run of the season."
