The Mules' and Jennies' cross country teams are preparing for the Missouri Border Wars meet coming up this Saturday in Edwardsville, Ill.
This meet will act as a measuring stick to see how Central compares to some of the teams in the MIAA conference this year.
"We're going to see a lot of conference teams there, so that will be important," said cross country head coach Kirk Pedersen. "It will definitely be a good chance to see how we stack up against the conference."
All season long, the Mules and Jennies have put forth excellent effort, but the team is ready for some big dividends.
"I want to compete well," Pedersen said. "I want a good effort, and I really want to see some good results come from that good effort."
After a very successful 2004 cross country campaign, the team is keeping their focus in the right direction.
"Our expectations are high," Pedersen said. "We expect to win the MIAA championship. That's the most important thing we are working hard and training for."
Hard work is exactly what the Mules and Jennies did last weekend against some very big competition during the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.
The Mules team were led by Jarod Wall, who finished the 8K race in 16th place with a time of 25:58 and helped the team place 15th in the men's university competition.
"I feel I did all right," Wall said. "It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. When I look at how I did against some of the top D-I and D-II schools, I can't be too disappointed.
"I thought I could have run a little better. There were some guys that I felt I could have kept up with a little better or even beat."
Pedersen was pleased with his top runner's performance.
"He's been dominant all year," Pedersen said. "It was a solid race for him."
Other contributors to the Mules' finish were Joe Mundt, who finished 75th with a time of 27:36 and Adam Akers, who was the 87th finisher at 27:49.
Gina Kennison led the Jennies to an 11th place finish in the women's university competition as she finished 44th with a time of 20:24. The Jennies were fourth among Division II schools at the meet.
Nicole Hasemeier was not far behind Kennison with a time of 20:44 as she finished in 51st place. Sandy Davidson was the next Jenny to cross the line and finished in 54th place with a time of 20:48.
Despite the hard work, Pedersen would have liked to see better overall times for his teams.
"Our team didn't run as particularly well as I had hoped," Pedersen said. "I hoped we would have seen better results, but the effort was there."
The competition at the Cowboy Jamboree was enormous, and the Mules and Jennies gave it their best effort.
"We ran well against some Division I schools," Pedersen said. "Now we get back and start to see some conference teams."
