This year, Central is seeing a larger number of homecoming queen candidates than in the past. Twelve women have plastered campus with posters trying to get their names out there.
The increase is due to the increased participation of campus organizations and honor groups. In addition to the seven sororities, groups such as Student Ambassadors, Phi Sigma Pi and Delta Sigma Pi are also sponsoring candidates.
Jennifer Baysinger, sponsored by the Student Ambassadors, believes it is a good opportunity to help promote her organization.
"Ambassadors work really hard for the University," Baysinger said, "and this is a great way to get our name out there."
In addition to Student Ambassadors, Baysinger is a member of the history club, Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi. She doesn't have much spare time, but when she does, she likes to be outdoors and spend time with friends and family.
Phi Sigma Pi, the honors fraternity, sponsors candidate, Sarah Howerton.
She says Phi Sigma Pi has taught her many important lessons.
"Holding various leadership positions, you have to learn to accommodate a diverse group of people," Howerton said.
Howerton also keeps busy as a community advisor and member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Sigma Kappa sponsors Claire Gorman. Her other activities include Alumni Ambassadors, Student Government Association and United Student Housing Association (USHA). She has held various positions including president and vice president of USHA. Gorman tries to be as involved as possible around campus.
"I'm very active and supportive of Central, but I also take school seriously," Gorman said.
Alpha Gamma Delta's candidate is Sarah Richardson. In addition to a float and a cheer competition, the women are hosting a spaghetti dinner for the Homecoming partners, Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. Alpha Gamma Delta is very important to Richardson, so she doesn't mind being busy.
"Alpha Gamma Delta is my life," Richardson said. "Without it, I would not be as involved, and I wouldn't have learned many valuable lessons."
