Glenn Carriker has been appointed Director of the Missouri Safety Center (MSC).

He accepted this role on Oct. 1 and will remain director until June 30, 2006. He has 30 years invested in the MSC program.

"I have served the last 14 years," Carriker said. "I had planned to retire, and then they offered it [position] to me."

"I think it's a good thing," said Michael Penrod, management specialist of MSC research operations. "I think Glenn will be good for the center. He brings a depth of experience with his position.

"Glenn was here when the center was focused differently and he knows where improvements are needed.

"I think the connections his roots bring to the center are helpful," Penrod said.

Terry Butler has been at MSC at Central for 23 years and was a student employee before that.

"Glen was doing the director's job while in the deputy director's position," Butler said. "He is the best choice.

"I don't know that there is anyone in our program that is more dedicated than Glenn. He is dedicated to the Missouri Safety and the center here at Central."

Carriker has plans to change the director's position from what it has been.

He wants the staff to be more involved. He plans on having the staff attend both state and national conferences.

"Some of the staff could benefit better than me. They deal with it every day."

"What I see is strength in the staff," Carriker said.

"They are what makes this place run. " We are a quite unique operation with 150 years combined service."

"Participating in both state and national level conferences will benefit the staff," Penrod said.

Another change in the plans at MSC is to attempt to use a distance-learning program to help in training fire safety, emergency medical personnel and police.

"We can save taxpayers some money by using technology for training instead of driving to different areas," Carriker said.

However, it will not replace the hands-on training are to receive.
