The renewal of two charter school agreements and state appropriations requests for FY 2010 were among items approved by the UCM Board of Governors when it met June 18 on campus. After hearing an update from Mike Wright, dean of the College of Education, on the status of university charter schools in the Kansas City area, the board approved motions to renew charter agreements for Academie Lafayette and Della Lamb Elementary Charter School.
Former Jennies track standout Kristin Anderson finished seventh in her semifinal heat in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the U.S. Olympic Trials Monday night in Eugene, Oregon at the Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. Anderson's time of 9:59.
Much has been made of the need to improve access to higher education for students from low-income backgrounds and those who are part of the first generation in their families to attend college. But the many recent initiatives by colleges to increase their recruitment of and financial aid for such students will only truly succeed if the traditionally underrepresented students thrive academically once they're there.
Neftali Torres' Central Cab service isn't just an essential element of the Warrensburg community, but is the virtual wheels for some working class families, students and senior citizens who commute. "I have always driven; driving is what I do; that's my passion," Torres said.
The UCM Mules basketball team announced that center Deante Burgess has agreed to play for the Cardinal & Black in 2008-09. As a freshman, Burgess played for NJCAA Hall of Fame Coach Vertie Sails at Southwest Tennessee Community College during the 2006-07 season.
