The next president of UCM must be someone who can build a sense of community, calm controversy and not be afraid to be unpopular, according to Michael Wright, dean of the College of Education and head of the Presidential Search Committee.

Speaking from his own point of view and not an overall representative of the 20-person committee, Wright said due to the large budget cuts facing Missouri higher education, the ideal candidate for president would be a business-minded individual as well as someone who understands academic procedure.

Shared democracy is not alive and well at UCM, according to several faculty members at the Feb. 25 general faculty meeting discussing the Board of Governors recent budget proposal.

It wasn't the over $5 million the Board of Governors had to cut or reallocate that had many worried, but the dismissal of six of the nine recommendations made by the Strategic Planning and Resource Council, a group created to represent the faculty, staff and student interests on campus.

After several amendments and much debate, the Faculty Senate voted against two motions of no confidence in UCM's Board of Governors, and for a motion to ensure a presidential search process that represents the entire UCM community.

Those arguing for the votes of no confidence seemed to agree that faculty were slowly losing influence in decisions made concerning University affairs.

The Department of Marketing and Business Law, formerly marketing and legal studies, has undergone a name change, and has an evolving interdisciplinary legal studies minor, under the watch of a committee of several professors in different fields.

"Part of the reason for the name change is so we can make a legal studies minor," said Steve Popejoy, an associate professor of business law.

On the south wall of the Union Atrium, a large poster hangs-almost 15 feet long. At first glance, it merely looks like a gray blur, but it's actually a number-one of the largest known Mersenne prime numbers, with more than 9.8 million digits.

This monstrous number was discovered by Curtis Cooper, computer and mathematics professor, and Steve Boone, associate dean of the College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences, in late 2006 as part of the worldwide search for a Mersenne prime number of more than 10 million digits.

Lady Gaga has been pulled apart by fashion critiques and at the same time praised by experts for her wild clothing choices on and off stage.

One in five women will fall victim to sexual assault within their four-year-term in college, according to a 2000 report by the U.S.

Department of Justice. Resources are available to help victims of sexual assault. Some of these resources offer shelter for women or a way to assist them with coping with the trauma of their rape.
Not the sweat, not the cheers, not even the final score. Nope. Watts couldn't get passed those sullen faces. To his right, teammate Joe Young was crying.
The one event that I had no idea we had a chance in was hockey.
